(Like I said, it's a review, I won't retell the whole story. There is the section "The Episode" were I'll give an resume about every episode...I'm working on that.)
I have to mention that the actual reason why I started to watch Grimm was Silas Weir Mitchell - I sooo loved him as psychotic Haywire in Prison Break and was so exited as I heard he's going to play a main character in Grimm!
At first I didn't expect too much from the show - talking of mystery stuff I already watch Supernatural and feared that Grimm would be more like a copy of that, also I watched that movie called Brothers Grimm and was quite disappointed, so I wasn't sure if the writers of Grimm would do a better job in putting that dark and gloomy fairy tale feeling together with a catching story. Well, I think they did, I was positively surprised!
So, now about my reaction to the pilot...things I totally loved for example were those "moments of shock" right at the beginning, when the blutbad catches the college girl or when Nick looks at the face of this pretty woman and all of sudden for a second it turns into...well...how should I describe it? Into something you just don't really want to see, but Nick, as a Grimm, has to. Let's just say, I'm glad not to be a Grimm!
But because I really loved being scared to death (not literally!) I'm really into small moments like this when I just wan't to put my hands in front of my face and hide behind the sofa. (Hey, I'm a girl, I'm allowed to be afraid of monsters, ok?)
Another absolutely adorable thing in this show are the dialogues, especially the lines of
The whole conversation between him and Nick was magnificent!
Also the "interior design" of the house of the real big bad wolf was just wonderful! A perfect cliche of the old German houses in times of the Brothers Grimm... The bad wolf himself had a few creepy and hilarious lines - as he offers the little red hooded girl a chicken pot pie I didn't now if to laugh or to shiver...and the line about the pillows he makes himself, great!
All in all I liked the episode and though the concept isn't completely new I love the gloomy atmosphere and how they try to involve the fairy tale background and the German words.
But, yeah, the emphasis lies on "try" because the German words were actually the thing that disturbed me most.
Maybe it's because I'm a German native speaker and really love the German language and all that stuff but somehow it really bothered me that they aren't able to decline the single German word they used - this race called "blutbad".
Ok, for someone who doesn't understand German it may sound mysterious and frightening, but translated literally it just means "blood bath", which is kind of a strange name for a creature. But that's not the problem, the problem is the plural - Munroe corrects Nick and tells him the right plural was "blutbaden", which is actually wrong, it should be "blutbäder". "Blutbaden" ist another German word, meaning "bathing in blood".
I'm not sure if they just didn't know it better or if it's a joke I don't get...but, whatever, it's just a word and doesn't make me dislike the show!
There has been another thing that's funny for German speakers: As Nick flips trough the pages of the book, we can see the headline of a page - "Hexenbiest". Literally translated this means "witch beast" and I really think this sound more funny than frightening!
But actually this doesn't really matter - I'm not perfect in English and write an English blog, why shouldn't they be allowed to use German words thought they're not perfect?
